The use of geospatial information has skyrocketed over the last few years. This can likely be credited to new device hardware, mobile development integration, and offerings of locationally aware data. With this change, there are a new range of databases, frameworks, and tools available to developers.
This talk is to explain the term GIS and what locationally aware data means for a developer. The discussion will start off with an introduction to terminology, followed by a definition of geospatial structures, an explanation of postgres/postgis as a datastore, and finally shapefiles, conversion tools, and a sample application. The plan is to convey an idea of how to structure as well as use locational data within the application.
